Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the south bank of lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland. It belong to the city of Yverdon-les-Bains.

Time

I took this picture on a winter Sunday. That is for sure, as I use to walk by the lake that day, as many other yverdonians. However, it's difficult to say when that way as you can see on the picture, it can be any time during this low-cloud almost-foggy day.

Lighting

Winter in Switzerland is very cloudy when you are not in any mountains. What the picture show is common winter day, where cloud are very low, almost being fog. When I walk by that day, I remember the scene was like "the earth stood still". You have light but no sun, it's daylight but you can't tell what moment of the day. It wasn't even windy and the lake frozen. And the lack of colour added a strange feeling to that moment. Iwas I was literally in a still picture!

Equipment

You know the best camera is the one you have with you. I didn't planned to take that shot, nor didn't I know how the weather condition were. So my best camera was an iPhone 8 I always have with me. If I knew I would have taken my DSLR. As I was unprepared for it, I think I even shoot in JPG, not in RAW.

Inspiration

This is very difficult to express through words. I took this picture because of the feelings I had at that moment : calm, silence, colourless, minimalist. I wanted to keep these feelings in memory.

Editing

I did a bit of post-processing. Just a bit, because I don't like my photos to be too much. For me the best effects are the one you don't see. So I added some light effects to just enhanced the image. I mostly payed with the exposure and contrast in Lightroom. The images is pretty much as it was when taken.

In my camera bag

I don't have a dedicated bag! When I go out I usually have my iPhone 8 with a small bag containing some useful cables, battery, and a gorilla pod. When I go for a shooting in mind, I have my Canon 70D with a Canon 18-55mm 2.8 with 2 SD card. Not even an extra battery. I like to move light, even if the Canon + lense are not light. I don't have a tripod, I like to shoot on the moment, very much live, like walking in a street market. I don't have the time to set up a tripod, there are a lot of movement and impromptu moment.

Feedback

I took this picture because I felt something that resonated in me. And I noticed it. Hopefully I had my iPhone 8 with me and took the image more as a reminder of that moment. My advice is if you find something you feel it can be something, just take that picture. It may be for nothing, but it may also be a wonderful memory or a crazy image for someone else, but also the start of a story you can tell.
