Behind The Lens

Location

This pic was taken on our Farm in Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa. This is a very inquisitive animal and wants to always see what is happening. So when I sat down to take the pic she came right up to me and it gave me a better unusual angle .

Time

It was almost mid day when I too this photo on an overcast but partly sunny day. The clods were building up for the daily thunderstorm.

Lighting

At the time I took this pic the sun was shining, which was a challenge as the whites needed to be taken care of. I exposed the pic for the highlights in order not to blow them out.

Equipment

This shot was taken hand held with Canon 5 D Mark III and 24/105 lens.

Inspiration

I am currently working on a Project which involves this kind of breed "Nguni". As one can see these cattle do have very beautiful and unusual markings, which make for a great photo. As they are my own, I did not de-horn my cattle as for my own taste, cattle should have horns. They look much more balanced that way.

Editing

I only did a crop and had to work on the sky and the shadows a little to bring back the details.

In my camera bag

On walks I do not take my camera bag with me, as with a little knowhow one can set the camera to almost all situations. Besides the Camera I have a cleaning kit, a external flash, spare batteries, a set of filters' ring flash for macros, lots of cables for all chargers, a set of Adapters, a spare memory card, a 28/300 lens and a set of extension tubes.

Feedback

My advise : Practice makes perfect. With digital one can try and experiment as much as one wants to in order to become better and eventually proficient. Shoot manual and in Raw format. An essential part with digital photography is to learn and get good in post processing. It is not cheating, like some photographers would say. In olden days there was the Darkroom, the big secret of any Photographer, where the same was done in order to bring out and manipulate images to make them pop.
