Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on our Farm in the Dargle valley in Kwa Zulu Natal in South Africa. It is a shot of one of our brood mares "Diva" She is a cross quarter horse and Thoroughbred. She is a natural Jumper and took my daughter to a very advanced level in her cross country career.

Time

This shot was taken on one of my every day morning walks in early spring. I remember it well as it was quite chilly that morning, with the mist being slowly dried up by the sun coming over the mountain. I guess i was just lucky to be there at the right time with my camera. That morning produced a series of very good "Mist" shots, which i still enjoy every time i look at them.

Lighting

When i walked out of the house the mist was thick and very monotone. Walking for about half an hour uphill the mist got thinner and thinner. When i came to the paddock my broodmares were in I could not believe my eyes. The light was changing every second. Out cam the camera and i took a series of photos playing around with the best possible setting. Shooting into the sun is a different thing all together.

Equipment

At that time i had the Canon 700 D with the 75-300 lens.It turned out that this was the best joyce for those conditions as i did not have to get up too close and disturb the horse having some breakfast.

Inspiration

It was a spur of the moment shot as i did not prepare for it at all. One makes a plan when the situation arrives.composition, mood, light all there at the time.

Editing

The only thing i did was I let a fence pole, that was right in front of the composition disappear in Photo Shop and a slight crop.

In my camera bag

Now i do have the Canon 5D mark III with the 24/105 lens. In my photo bag i have a set of Filters, a cleaning kit, a torch, a ring flash, a external speed light, a cable release, a tripod a spare battery for camera and speed light as well as a few AA Batteries.

Feedback

To walk away with a picture that is a little above the rest, one has to be prepared for any situation and make the best of the equipment at hand. Know your camera, and always take pictures in the highest resolution your camera can handle. I only shoot in Raw format, as it allows you to correct sight mishaps, like underexposure and slight focus issues.Walk around and try to see what other people don`t see. Have a good understanding of Composition. In the beginning it seems all a bit too much to take in and do it properly at the spur of the moment. It happens to all of us. Practice makes perfect and perseverance and passion get`s you there.
