Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken near Mayer's Marina in Webster, New York on the Lake Ontario side of Lake Road.
Time
For this shot, I woke up with the intention of getting to this location just before sunrise with the intention of trying to capture a beautiful sky.
Lighting
My idea for this image was to capture a nice array of colors in the sky before the sun had completely risen, so the image wasn't overpowered with golden yellow light. I think that the ice that's prevalent on the rocks and pier allow for enough color to be reflected that the colors pop and the image isn't too bright.
Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 77D, 24mm f/2.8 lens, and 4 stop neutral density filter.
Inspiration
Before taking this photograph, I felt like my portfolio was missing a winter image that was both beautiful but also actually looked cold. Since my favorite images to take are sunrise or sunset long exposures, I wanted to find a spot that allowed me to really show off an icy scene with a lot of color.
Editing
For almost all of my photographs, there is some post-processing. For this image, I brought up the contrast to allow the color in the image to pop. I also bumped up the vibrance of the image as well as increase the saturation just a touch on the right side of the image. Finally, I brought up the exposure just a bit to allow for some more dynamic range in the rocks and ice.
In my camera bag
Right now, I'm shooting with a Canon 77D, a 24mm f/2.8 lens, and a 50mm f/1.4 lens. I also just switched over to Formatt-Hitech filters and i'm currently using a 7 stop 100x100mm neutral density filter.
Feedback
For an image like this, the most important thing is being willing to go out and shoot in some undesirable conditions. The best thing to do is scout locations that get hit by large waves so the water can freeze and allow for some reflections which will only enhance the image. It's also important to find a composition that showcases ice freezing in unique ways because that's what makes the image different from the millions of other winter images being taken everyday.
