Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. As an avid hiker from Canada, I picked up photography to document my hikes and share the photos with friends and family. Torres del Paine was a hiking trip dream of mine - I made this trip with my girlfriend (now wife) in just 8 days. A short and sweet but totally worth it journey.

Time

This was taken around noon on our way up Mirador Britanico via Valle Frances. Probably my favourite hike on the W trail.

Lighting

The noon light made the spires glisten like the city Minas Tirith from Lord of the Rings. The contrast created by the clouds and the green foliage just made the spires pop out even more against the blue backdrop of the sky. I'm not kidding when I say that it was almost too bright to look at without sunglasses.

Equipment

This was shot with an Olympus OMD-Mark ii with an M. Zuiko 7-14mm 1:2.8 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

It was foreboding and beautiful at the same time. Just magnificent. It really felt like we were going somewhere fantastical, not wanting to forget this site and sight, I was compelled to take the shot.

Editing

Actually, no. I didn't think this photo really needed any post-processing but I was also inexperienced with post-processing software at the time. Now that this photo is getting some attention, maybe I'll revisit it in the future.

In my camera bag

Well as an amateur photography I don't have a ton of equipment to carry around, and since I hike a lot, I like to pack light. The camera I use is an Olympus OMD-Mark ii which is perfect for me since it is light and weather proofed for my adventures. My arsenal of lenses is just three: M. Zuiko wide lens, M. Zuiko portrait lens, and the M. Zuiko macro lens. I have a tripod too, but I hate lugging it around, so I often improvise if I need a stable shot by using rocks, or tree branches to create the stability I need.

Feedback

The only advice I have for others is to not be afraid to improvise, and to trust your intuition. Take the shot; then take it again, and again, and again.
