Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Walkhaven Dog Park here in South Africa.

Time

This photo was taken on 17 July 2016, around 1 pm.

Lighting

Only natural light was used, even with a 1 pm light I feel that it has a strong effect on the photo, and there were no clouds so only direct sunlight was available.

Equipment

My equipment that I used was my Nikon D5500 with my Nikkor 18 - 55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G DX VR II, and no other equipment were used.

Inspiration

I always love to photograph dogs especially when they are in action. Walkhaven Dog Park is one of my favorite places to photograph dogs especially when they are playing and just having fun, just to get that true nature of dogs in a photograph is my main goal for my dog photography.

Editing

There is a little bit of post-processing in this photo, I use Photoshop and did some colour grading and added a little bit vignette.

In my camera bag

My camera body I use now is my Nikon D850, with my favorite lens, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro prime, my second favorite lens at the moment, the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX, and the ones I occasionally use are the Nikkor 18 - 55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G DX VR II and the Nikkor 55 - 200mm f/4 - 5.6G DX VR II. I also have my Manfrotto tripod along with my Neewer shutter release in case I need to do long exposures.

Feedback

With dog or any pet photography you must be patient and study the animal and see what it does, what their actions are. If you want to get the shot, you must follow the animal and with your camera if you think you know what it will do then take the shot. Action shots can be tricky, you can choose to photograph any time of the day but preferably early morning or late afternoon but you'll maybe struggle in low light because your focus must be quick if your subject is moving very fast. With a fast moving subject I usually use continuous low and AF-C for continuous focusing on my D850.
