Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I had just graduated from high school and I saved up my money from my serving job and it was totally worth it! This photo captures so much more then just sea lions, It captures the body language from the seals taking a nap in the scorching heat and the connection between the two sea lions that are preforming mating calls.

Time

This photograph was a total mistake. It was the middle of the day, around 1 pm, and it was scorching hot, a near 40 degrees Celsius. I was on a boat tour with my best friend and had just cracked a beer ( because apparently in mexico its legal!). I was watching the waves crash against the boat, the condensation from my beer dripping down my hand and then I heard a screech. we drove the boat around the island and there was this beautiful alcove within the rock that houses dozens of sea lions. I instantly grabbed my camera and I took 3 photographs. I didn't even look at them to see if they were any good, I was so mesmerized hearing these two sea lions exchange back and forth.

Lighting

Like I said, this photo was a complete accident, The camera managed to pick up this beautiful spot light encasing the two sea lions in an almost mystifying glow. I think the lighting in the photo captures the sea lions showing themselves off to each other, but also as viewers we have a focal point emphasized by not only an action but also with lighting.

Equipment

This was shot on a Cannon Rebel T-5 with a 55/1 focal length.

Inspiration

I love photographing sports because there is this raw emotion that comes over a player when they are on the field. This was one of those raw moments where you could feel the emotion. It was a surreal experience to witness and an honor to get that close to wild animals.

Editing

I adjusted the brightness on my PC computer just using the photo app.

In my camera bag

I repurposed a sewing kit as a camera bag and it fits my Cannon Rebel T-5,and the 18-55mm lens and the 75-300mm lens as well as some memory cards.

Feedback

My advice for capturing a photo such as this one is to not force the beauty, capture the raw emotion. This photo was about spontaneity and excitement for me. The photo is so meaningful because there are dynamics at play. The energy level of the sea lions laying down in the background is minimal as majority of them are sleeping. The two sea lions that are seated upwards are clearly more excited. This goes to show that the background subjects are a major component to a photograph.
