Behind The Lens

Location

I attended The Flying Legends Airshow in July 2018 at The Imperial War Museum RAF Duxford , Cambridgeshire , England where a large international collection of vintage aircraft are displayed in both museum and airworthy condition.

Time

Mid morning on a bright hot summers day prior to the start of flying programme a number of period actors posed on the flightline for us photographers who had paid to do the ' Flightline Walk ' . This young man dressed in authentic WWII RAF uniform must have been feeling the heat , this photo was taken at 09:30 with the temperature already around 28c/82f

Lighting

Tht day was blazing bright sunshine from dawn until dusk and the static aircraft had a lot of light flares where the sun caught , this made editing a little tricky , i had to drop the highlights and bring up the shadows more than i would normally do to lessen the effect of light flare

Equipment

Nikon D5200 with a Sigma 18-250

Inspiration

Even though he's only an actor , the aircraft in the background are genuine WWII (RAF Spitfires) i felt the composition was rather unique and is one of my favourite photos i took on the 2018 UK display circuit

Editing

Shot in RAW , edited as always in Lightroom and then into black and white. I feel the the black and white edit of this shot is far stronger than the colour version (also on my wall)

In my camera bag

Amongst the various spare bits & pieces in my camera bag are a pair of Nikon D5200 with Sigma 18-250 / Sigma 18-300 for ground shots and a Sigma 150-500 for air display shots.

Feedback

Don't be affraid to work in black and white , it's a fantastic medium
