Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a simple room of an appartment in Montpellier, France, with an improvised ministudio made with poor quality fabric

Time

I think we did it early in the morning, so keep fresh air in the room since summer days in Montpellier can be incredibly hot, and we didn't have the chance to get Airco equipment

Lighting

To creative the hard shadows that makes the "lingerie" on the model, my flash was too soft... surprisingly, the flashlight of a smartphone did the job better

Equipment

Full frame camera for a small place is a must have... So we did it with Canon 6D. But after that not so much rigging for this work, a couple of white foam board, incense for smoke and let's go shoot

Inspiration

When I came to live in Montpellier a few years ago, I met this awesome papercut Artist called Rachel Weasel Fisher : She is so talented I was amazed and proposed her a collaboration where she would bring some of her papercuts into my studio, and we would "clothe" models with it. Not only she agreed, but she brought extraordinary beautiful models with her like Mary here.

Editing

I usually postprocess in Capture One or Lightroom by selecting only 3 dominant colors max in a picture. This is the main postproduction I did here.

In my camera bag

My bag stays light, so I can move fast. A Full Frame reflex, a couple of lenses - usually a Zeiss 50mm and a 21mm - some filters and a tripod for long exposures. I now added a second hand profoto b2 kit because I really enjoy creating "theatre" atmospheres and it's one of the most versatile tools I have ever used for remote photography.

Feedback

Keep it simple! The more you shoot, the more you discover It is incredibly hard to blacksmith a good photo without polluting it with parasitic informations. Everytime I get lost in creation, I erase everything and restart from clean blank canvas... Most of my best pics come from a simple idea, just done properly.
