Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken from a kayak in the headwaters of Taylorsville Lake in Spencer County, Kentucky.

Time

The image was just before 1pm in the afternoon.

Lighting

Lighting was difficult as there were shadows cast from overhanging tree branches as well as bright sunlight filtering through the foliage.

Equipment

Image was taken with an Olympus E-5, handheld at 1/800th of a second at f/7.0. ISO was 640 and equivalent focal length was 400 mm.

Inspiration

I was out on the lake in my Vagabond Poke Boat doing some "birding".

Editing

Post processing was simply a matter of balancing the highlights and shadows and cleaning up a few distracting spots.

In my camera bag

When In my kayak I normally have a tripod along for use when I can, but rely mostly on the freedom of movement afforded by shooting handheld. Two camera bodies (on this trip two Olympus E-5's. One outfitted a lens around 200mm - 400mm focal length and one outfitted with around a 400mm - 800mm equivalent focal length.

Feedback

Planning and scouting ahead of time will help ensure a better chance of getting a few Good captures. It's not always possible but try to set up where you have the best chance of catching your subject "front lit". Be Patient. Other than that, just being in the right spot at the right time.
