After a couple of tries, the former Post Office building in Central Melbourne, a really lovely old building, now houses among other things, a number of small cafes, this cool and shady place is, it would seem the perfect setting for some inward looking evaluation. I was in the city to visit the Christmas Windows in one of the big department stores and waiting for friends, and as so often happens with street photography, a moment in time was suddenly in front of me.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my home city of Melbourne Victoria. The setting is the old post office building that dates back 1860 and is considered culturally significant. It was repurposed as a shopping centre and small cafes were opened in the passage around the outside. I love this old building with its interesting arched areas creating a wonderful light and shade effect.

Time

It was really early at 7.45 am, I regularly met my sister in the city and routinely came early to allow myself some time to pursue my favourite form of photography, street photography. I'm self-taught and had a lot to learn at this point and although quite a few years have gone by since it was taken, still have a lot to learn. It seems to me photography is a constant learning curve, the minute you think you understand one thing, it seems to open up a list of things you don't yet understand, I love this about photography.

Lighting

What drew me to this photo and the reason I framed it like this was the light and shade being shaped by the curves and pillars that are part of this building. I also loved the tunnel-like effect of the arches as they disappeared into the distance'

Equipment

I shot with an EOS 5D mark 111, a really beautiful camera and a Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS.

Inspiration

I arrived in the city early on purpose to allow me the opportunity to wander around Melbourne's laneways with plenty of time to stop and observe or to just keep moving and taking photos as the moments presented themselves. Everyone is different in their approach to street photography, my favourite method was to wander and snap the moments as they appear. Melbourne's laneways with their many restaurants and coffee shops create the perfect setting for this approach as there is a constant stream of people wending through the maze of lanes.

Editing

I used a combination of Lightroom and Nik to post-process this image. I love black and white but normally shoot in colour with the intention of experimenting later in whichever editing program I am using. For me, street photos often seem to come alive once I have edited them to black and white, it seems to help to focus the viewer's attention on the intended subject.

In my camera bag

My camera is currently a Canon EOS 6D mark 11, either the Canon 24-105mm f/4 lens or my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art and my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8. It really all depends on where I'm planning to do most of my shooting or if I want to travel light, sometimes I only take the 50mm lens with me and this allows me to be a little bit less visible and also to shoot in much less light.

Feedback

My best advice is to follow your own stars, work at developing your own style and seeing the world around you and interpreting it with your own eyes. This takes time so take your camera out often, you need to do this not only to develop a style but also to train your eye to see those moments that are happening around you. Study the masters, this is really important and helps you to see our world in so many different ways and point out many times over that there is no one style and understand that you see the world in your own unique way.
