Behind The Lens

Location

The model wanted to do a portrait session around her home. She was more comfortable and made for a very enjoyable shoot.

Time

This shoot was a number of weeks in the planning. We shot during mid morning. This allowed plenty of natural light into the house and I was able to use my flash for fill.

Lighting

I wanted to make sure my model was the focus, so I used the flash as a main light on her. This darkened the background to allow her to stand out.

Equipment

This is one of my earliest shoots. I was using a Yashica 2000 35mm camera, a flash mounted on the camera, a 70-300mm minolta screw mount lens and Kodak 400 X Pan film.

Inspiration

This was something my model/client wanted to do for her husband.

Editing

This was scanned from the original negative. I used photoshop to do some minor adjustments and convert to a sepia tone.

In my camera bag

Nowadays, I use a Nikon D5500. I also carry a Nikon SB 600 speed light. I now carry a 65mm prime lens, a 70-300mm lens and a 24-70mm lens.

Feedback

Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware of light sources and direction. Take multiple shots, angles and exposures. A light meter is important if you have one.
