An ice cave is formed on top of the glacier. The melt water seeks a weak spot in the ice, and is drilled through a 50-meter-thick layer of ice. Where the water touches the rock bottom, a "jokullhaupt" arises, this is a river that cuts the ice on the way to the sea. The cavity (sometimes hundreds of meters long) is the cave. Entering the cave without a guide is perilous. The cave also disappears after a while, while new ones are continually being formed. Where there are holes in the ice, the light enters, the colors vary from green to blue, depending on the light and the structure of the ice.
