Captain Orton was a member of the 1st California Volunteer Regiment. His military organization was established in 1861 near Oakland. He served throughout the American Civil War. His unit made camp at the El Morro Promontory during its return to California. The 1st CAL. Reg. was inactivated in 1866, after supporting operations in New Mexico and Texas.
