Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the balcony of the apartment I was staying in when on a short holiday to Benidorm in Spain. The apartment was on the 15th floor of the complex I was staying at.

Time

As it was a clear warm night I wanted to get a picture of the view from my apartment. This photo was taken at 1.20 am when I got back in from a night out. As I didn't have any photography equipment other than a point and shoot camera the floor of the balcony was enough to stabilise the camera.

Lighting

I love taking picture at night and just loved how the light was looking across the city, late at night and the place was still alive. I also loved the fact the sky was clear and the light from the moon bathed the area to add to the lights from the streets and the buildings.

Equipment

I used by Canon IXUS 190 to take this picture This was the only camera I had as I had not planned on a holiday where I took photography equipment with me.

Inspiration

Quite simply, the night scene in front of me, my love of taking photos at night and the colour's seen at night that you don't see in the day! Normally I would have to travel to get something like this but it almost felt as it this was presented to me on a plate, so to speak. A case of improvising when the chance takes it, and a nice flat balcony did it for me.

Editing

The answer is no, I used the camera's own settings to take this and a number of test photo's to get the right balance, light and colour.

In my camera bag

Normally carry a Canon Rebel t2i, Canon EOS1000D as a backup and for lenses I carry Canon 18-55 and 70-300 mm lit lenses and a Canon 50mm f1.8 for low light. I also carry spare batteries, a monopod and a mini tripod along with spare memory cards.

Feedback

All I would say is if the chance presents itself then go for it, and if you need to improvise there is always a way. Walls, chairs, ledges, bins and even the ground will do to get the stability and time you need to get the picture you are looking for.
