Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside the door of my home. It is a perfect example that not all great portraits are taken in a studio. Anywhere can be your studio if you are willing to look.

Time

I remember that my daughter was feeling exceptionally energetic that afternoon and my husband took her outside to play. It was a crisp fall afternoon and I grabbed my camera to take some photos of the colorful foliage. It was between 2 and 3 pm. My daughter cooperated and let me take some photos of her playing with the fallen leaves.

Lighting

This is all natural lighting. She is facing south at about 3 pm.

Equipment

My Nikon D3100 with a 70-300 mm lens

Inspiration

I heard her say (in her little 4 year old voice) "Ank you (thank you) Daddy, I Love You" and knew it was a tender moment that I wanted to capture and remember.

Editing

As I said, I was photographing the colorful foliage, so this was originally photographed in color which is sweet in its own way, but I wanted the focus to be the emotion between them so using Pixlr, I first desaturated the image and then added the Adrian (one of my favorite) filter.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D3100, the 70-300 mm lens and a 50 mm Prime lens (which I am enjoying learning how to use). I also am known to carry a Kodak Z8612 IS around with me too.

Feedback

Don't out your camera away. I was literally at my door when I took this. I thought I was done for the day. Had I turned my camera off, I would have missed this photograph and a great memory. I would also say to remember that not all great portraits are taken in a studio. In fact, none of the portraits I take are in a traditional studio. Anywhere can be your studio.
