Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken in Zapalo Bay in Episkopi area, in Limassol. This is a place I always wanted to visit. After 60 minutes of driving there we arrived. We walked for about 25 minutes and we saw the pier. The clods were looking promising so we took our long exposure chances.

Time

After my nightshift I was to sleepy to take my car and try to get to a decent location. But after I saw the cloud formations everything changed. I new that I had to take my chances. I called my friend George and we hit the road. This shot was taken some minutes after the sunset. Having a ten stop nd filter and a 3 stop nd grad I needed about 600 secs to expose the shot right. Well after 600secs of exposure and 600 secs of noise reduction I saw the result on my camera. It was not that bad.

Lighting

I was just expecting the sunset. After 600 seconds of exposure I managed to blend pink, purple, gold and blue colors together.

Equipment

I used the Pentax K1 with the Pentax d-fa 15-30. I Used a Haida 10 stop and filter and a Raymasters 3 stops nd grad filter.

Inspiration

To be honest I saw a lot of great shots that were taken in that area . I always wanted to visit this place. I was also lucky enough and the clouds were nice and colorful.

Editing

For that shot I made basic lightroom adjustments, lift the shadows a little bit, added some contrast, lower the highlights a little bit. Some hue adjustments. And added some blue with Blue Primary in color calibration.

In my camera bag

Normally I have packed my Pentax K1 with my d-fa 15-30. As a backup camera I used my Pentax K5 with the Sigma 10-20. I always carry my filter holder with my haida 10 stop and my raymasters nd grad filter. Also 2 batteries, my Samyang 20mm 1.8 and my Pentax d-fa 28-105 in case I don't need something too wide.

Feedback

Be patient, measure all the factors you have and the result will be great. Don't just go there and shoot. After the sunset you need to add some more time for your exposure as it becomes darker. Something very useful but time consuming is the LE noise reduction. It's a good way to avoid overheated pixels during your long exposures.
