Location
This is Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Most infamously known as the location of the assassination of John F. Kennedy. There is a pedestrian bridge that overlooks the plaza and it's symmetrical set of roads leading up into the city center.Time
Taken about 30 minutes after sunset, deep into the 'Blue Hour', but still had a little bit of light left in addition to the city lights.Lighting
This is a blend of several long exposures to get the full set of vehicular traffic from left to right. Stopped down to f/16 to get the best light bursts out of the lighting along the road and as long of an exposure as I could to get more cars in a single frame.Equipment
Shot with my Canon 5Dmk4, 16-35F4L at 17mm, tripod in use as my Induro 304L and Induro ball head. Wired shutter release was used to get the best timing of the cars passing through the plaza.Inspiration
I'd seen several shots from this location, but was my first time visiting this vantage point. A small group of fellow photographers met there in the evening and all came away with great shots.Editing
I layered 4 individual frames over one another to get the entire set of light trails visible in the final image. I took the best lights from each frames, overlaying them with 'lighten' mode and layer masks to get the best of the entire set. Other than that, just a general edit for contrast and color.In my camera bag
I shoot with the Canon 5D and 6D full frame bodies, and an assortment of Canon L-series lenses from the 16-35F4L to 70-200F4L. While I am primarily a landscape photographer, I enjoy shooting cityscapes when I can't escape to more natural settings.Feedback
Patience and a few Photoshop skills help when getting light trails. There will be cars changing lanes, using their blinker, stopping in the wrong spot, all sorts of things that will screw up one part of the frame while you're getting ideal traffic flow in another. Taking lots of frames to blend and choose from helps put together the ideal final view.
