Behind The Lens

Location

MamTor is a 500 metre hill near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England, UK. Its name means "mother hill", so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of "mini-hills" beneath it.

Time

I decided to shoot this scene in later afternoon in October, when the autumn (fall) colours really stood out as the moorland heathers had a golden glow to them as the evening sun lit them.

Lighting

Shooting later afternoon in autumn (fall), really enhances the dramatic light available on landscapes with the sun low in the sky casting long shadows and creating lots of contrast within the scene

Equipment

This was shot with a Fujfilm X-T2 camera and Fujifilm XF10-24mm lens, with a 0.6 Neutral Density Graduated filter (to darken the sky). The camera was mounted on a Manfrotto 055XB tripod.

Inspiration

Known to be one of the best ridge walks in the country, this Peak District walk gives stunning views over Edale, Hope Valley and even the edge of Kinder Scout. There is also an option to extend this route to an 8 mile walk to include a stroll by the river on the way back. Knowing that the weather forecast was good for the shot I had in mind, I knew this afternoon had the potential for a breathtaking landscape.

Editing

Shooting in RAW file format, I edited the photo in Adobe Lightroom and made some basic adjustments including adding a small amount of contrast, saturation and sharpening, and then finished off by adding a little vignette to tone down the edges of the image.

In my camera bag

My default camera is a Fujifilm X-T2 which is a great all round camera for all types of photography. If I intend to do a lot of walking for my photography I try to keep the camera bag as light as possible so carry 2 lenses that give me focal ranges to cover most scenes, these are the Fujifilm XF16-80mm and Fujifilm XF55-200mm. Additionally I always take filters with me, including a polariser and neutral density graduated filter which helps tonw down bright skies.

Feedback

Always keep an eye on the weather forecast, and think about what type of feeling you want to capture in the photo. Foggy / misty weather will help create mysterious feel to the images, whilst late evening or early morning sun will create photographs with real colour pop.
