Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, in a small woodland area on a University campus. She was attending her Matric Farewell/ Prom.

Time

This was taken in the late afternoon, 17:11 on 12 October 2018

Lighting

As it is late spring in South Africa, I wanted the natural late afternoon sun to do all the work. I positioned the subject with the sun to our backs, trying to reflect as much sun back to create this.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5300 with a 50mm prime lens.

Inspiration

As it was her Matric Farewell, and we had this mirror as a prop, I was thinking that it would be a great idea to theme this: "looking back on 12 years of my life."

Editing

I did some post processing work in Lightroom. Not much though, some cropping, color and light enhancing. most of the time spent was to work out if I need to crop it to the "3rd rule" or to use my own initiatives.

In my camera bag

My wife joins me on all my excursions, so normally we have a bag full of equipment, 2 of each almost...

Feedback

My advice - use the possibilities of your digital camera by taking as many as possible shots of the same subject, while changing the settings until you are satisfied. My analogy is that any person can take a picture and post process it until it lands up in a magazine. It take much more skills to take the picture correctly and do as little as possible to it, and still lands up in a magazine
