Location
I took this photo while hikiing the Cross Town Trail in the Alberni Valley on Vancouver Island. Though we do not have the brilliant fall colours of eastern Canada the colours here are made more vibrant by the evergreen forests.Time
This photo was taken in the early in the day before the fog that sits in the valley most days this time of year.Lighting
The early morning light is soft and even more so when foggy. Often the contrast is too stark later in the day when the fog thins and the sun is higher in the sky. Everything has a tendency to blend in the background and enhance the fall colours.Equipment
I use my Ipad to take photos these days. Getting older with failing eyesight the large screen helps with lining a shot. Though somewhat clumsy it has worked fairly well for daytime shots.Inspiration
I walk in the rainforests of the Alberni Valley on a daily basis. I grew up in the valley but lived away for most of my life. Returning to the Alberni Valley I realized my love of it had not dimmed during the years away. I have been inspired to take photos to share with those I have met across the country so they too could fall in love with the beauty of the Alberni Valley.Editing
I do use a photo editor program to try and enhance the feeling that the view inspired in me to take the photo in the first place. It is so easy to go to far in the editing process so I usually go outrageously far then backtrack until that feeling is triggered again. I will rarely enhance the colour but will the contrast, and brightness. Sometimes if the subject is somewhat lost I will apply a bit of vignette being careful to be subtle so as to not take away from the subject. In my camera bag
The only thing I have in my equipment bag is my Ipad. One of these days I hope I can afford a camera with a good macro lens for the world of the small carries such interest to me.Feedback
This photo requires getting out in nature. I have found that every time I am out for a walk or hike there are always opportunities to take photos. The more I get out the finer tuned the eye becomes at detecting subjects of interes. If it catches the eye I take a pic well usually more than one. Different angles, lighting, and background can offer up amazing results. If able get close to the subject and try a closeup. In this photo it is the leaves on the ground that carried the eye towards the colours in the distance.
