We hiked a good portion of White Sands National Monument, bypassing where two young girls jumped over the walkway to write their ephemeral love in the gypsum sand dune. It was chilly and foreboding and a good sunset wasn't in the offing. Still a little color appeared through the clouds. Just a hint.
