Behind The Lens

Location

Taken from DUMBO in Brooklyn.

Time

The photo was taken just after sunset as night fell on the city.

Lighting

The city lights of Manhattan were glistening off the Hudson River.

Equipment

Canon 7D II and I believe 17-55mm 2.8 lens at 53mm. Manfroto Tripod, 13 second exposure.

Inspiration

Love the look of Manhattan at night; New York City is full of amazing architecture and new photo opportunities around every corner. Wanted a longer exposure to get a silkier effect on the water.

Editing

Yes, post processed in Adobe RAW, then used Nik filters for DeNoise and Nik Color Effects Pro, detail enhancer.

In my camera bag

I converted since this photo and am a Nikon shooter now. I own a Nikon D6, a D850 and D500 (and a Z9 is on the way, I hope). For walking around I carry the 14-24mm 2.8; the 24-70 2.8 and 80-400mm 4.5-5.6 lenses. I do a lot of bird and wildlife photos so also own the 800 5.6 but it's a little much to carry around, but it's with me whenever I go out for birds.

Feedback

The DUMBO neighborhood is wonderful in Brooklyn. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge late one afternoon, and end up in DUMBO. Shoot different angles of the bridge, and consider a long exposure. It's worth lugging a tripod as you can get some neat effects on the water. Consider a graduated neutral density filter too if you have nice clouds over the city as you can get some really nice sunset shots.
