Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in Germany, in Wartburg Castle where Martin Luther had taken refuge. This room has very little natural light in order to protect the colour of the mosaics which line the walls and ceilings.

Time

It was mid-morning on a very hot day, but the room itself was very cool.

Lighting

In order to protect the colours, we were of course not permitted to use flash. I propped my body against a column, Doug my elbows into my ribs, slowed my breath and and carefully pushed the shutter in between heartbeats. Four of my 10 shots taken that way were sharper than I would have expected.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D70s, at 65mm, ISO 1600 set at f5.3 and 1/13. Truthfully, I wasn't sure that it would work. It came out way better than I thought it would.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the richness of the room through a close up rather than shooting the whole scene.

Editing

There was very little post-processing done.

In my camera bag

For this trip, I carried my faithful Nikon, a tripod, a monopod, and a speed light. Because I was also carrying books for research and notebooks for on the spot classes, I couldn't carry the second Nikon complete with macro lens as I normally do

Feedback

Be prepared to hang back and shoot after the other members of your group have left. The fewer people there are around, the less distraction you have and the less likely you are to be jostled. In this case, not even monopods were permitted into the room let alone a tripod. Be prepared to steady your body in any way possible.
