I booked a photography tour for the slot canyons in Arizona as a birthday gift to myself.Time
The best time to get the shafts of light goes against everything we learn in photography! The best time of day is around high noon during the summer when the sun is almost directly overhead!Lighting
No additional lighting needed. A tripod is a requirement for the tour because of the slightly longer exposure but still have to think about blowing the highlights where the sunlight hits the ground.Equipment
I used a Nikon D600, Sigma 24 Art, meFoto tripodInspiration
I’ve always loved seeing other’s photos in the slots and knew I had to visit to see and capture my own images.Editing
In post, I needed to remove someone’s foot and leg (sounds macabre I know, ????) and enhanced the texture a tiny bit.In my camera bag
I’ve upgraded my gear since this image: Nikon D5 and D750, Nikon 24-70 and 70-200, Sigma 150-600 S, Nikon 150 microFeedback
Be prepared for the crowds! There’s other tours going while you’re trying to get your shots. That’s where the guides come in, they ALL work together to make sure you get a clear image. Of course there’s always the entitled ones who want to do what they want (they’re the ones writing the negative reviews saying the guides were rude????), if you take enough shots, that random person (or leg-foot combo) can be easily eliminated. Oh the dust! Bring a cover of some sort because that red dusty/sandy environment will deposit grit any and everywhere. It’s also hot in there and with the crowds, it’s more so. HAVE FUN!
