Behind The Lens

Location

I was in NYC for 9/11 anniversary and the next morning I went to Brooklyn to catch Manhattan at sunrise and the last glimmer of the Tribute in Lights.

Time

It felt odd to wander the streets leisurely while everyone else was hustling and bustling in their morning routines.

Lighting

It was still early, between 8 and 9 AM and the sun was just touching the taller structures and leaving everything else in shadows. The bridge seemed to glow in the soft light, the colors were vibrant and rich.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D90, 18-55mm, handheld while lying on the ground.

Inspiration

I’ve always liked bridges, some more than others. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of my favorites, it’s an iconic structure known all over the world. I’ve seen many images mostly from the same angle and I captured those but I was never satisfied. I wanted a different view and I found it!!

Editing

Post processing was minimal, I like the color version but I love it in black and white with high contrast. It’s more about the bridge, the arch and the textures than the color.

In my camera bag

D600, D700, 24-70, 70-200 and 150-600, polarizing filters, ND filters, tripod are usually what I’m carrying. I’ll switch things up a bit if I’m doing Milky Way and stars, then I’ll grab my 14mm, 24mm or 50mm depending on my loaction

Do some research, find out what other views your intended subject has been captured and look for something different: season, weather, activities, point of view.
