These cliffs consist of volcanic tuff (also called tufa), which is a thick layer of volcanic ash, compressed and partially heat-welded. It looks and acts like a very soft sandstone. Here, early native peoples both enlarged gas bubbles to form little caves ("cavates" to archeologists), and shaped broken tuff into blocks to build rooms against the bottom of the cliffs. The horizontal lines of round holes held one end of the roof beams of the stone rooms.
