Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken from Ponte dell'Accademia, Venice, Italy. One of the most popular places among photographers. However, I was not really aware of this place. Quite accidentally, I found this place on my way to San Marco square the day before. And then I knew I need to take some morning shots from here. :)

Time

It was a brand new year. I remember planning to take some early morning shots at San Marco square. The sun rises quite late in early January (lucky for me !), which gave me quite some time to walk from my hotel to the bridge. There were some intermittent clouds and a bit of wind which carried the colour of the morning rays.

Lighting

Early morning light always amazes me with its freshness. But I wanted to capture the complete dynamics of the scene. Long exposure gave that opportunity to place multiple events, changing the colour of the sky, reflection on the ripples of canal water, trails of passing boats and movements of the clouds, in one single frame.

Equipment

This shot was taken with Canon 70D, Canon 18-135mm f/3.5 STM lens and a ND filter with -10 stops.

Inspiration

During my stay in Venice, I was looking to take some photos that define venice but with some hardly seen before twists. As I reached a bit before sunset, I had opportunity to experiment a bit. But when I saw vivid colour coming up from the east, with bit of dark coverage and moving clouds, I knew I need to add this to the essence of Venice. That's venice for you, busy, bright and beautiful.

Editing

Yes. I always take in raw format. Which required a bit of colour adjustment as well as standard brightness, exposure and contrast adjustments.

In my camera bag

My equipments are rather simple. I have a canon 70D camera body. Then I pack my canon 18-135mm, f/3.5 STM lens, mostly for the landscape or wide-angle portraits. The angle range is absolutely great. A ND filter. A canon 50 mm, f/1.8 and 85 mm, f/1.8 primes for close portrait shots. And, as I love taking long exposure photos, always a sturdy tripod.

Feedback

Planning and preparation. One should have a prior idea (you may not be lucky always), check out the places before hand, if possible. Reach early and tryout some experiments with camera settings. This always helps. Equipments are very important for long exposure shots. Use a sturdy tripod and have at least few ND filters. The light changes very fast during sunrise and sunsets.
