Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Kathmandu, Nepal. As we were wandering the streets we saw this young guys mother trying to put his beanie on and as can be seen in the photo he was not happy about it.

Time

This image was taken about mid morning Nepal time. I do not adjust the clock in the camera when we travel but remember being out in the streets until lunch time.

Lighting

When this image was taken it was overcast but still reasonable lighting. I took this shot from a distance so no flash or tripod was used.

Equipment

This image was taken with a Canon 350D camera with a Canon 70-300mm lens. It was taken at 1/250 sec with an ISO of 200 and zoomed to 265mm. No flash or tripod was used.

Inspiration

We were wandering the streets of Kathmandu looking to take a few portrait and candid people shots when we came across this young fellow and his mother. Just the look on this youngsters face said take it. I remember lining the shot up when he directly looked towards the camera although I am not sure that he realized I had taken his photo.

Editing

The original image was in colour and it was converted to black and white in Photoshop elements together with auto sharpen.

In my camera bag

I carry in my backpack today Canon 80D and 90D bodies together with Canon 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS ll USM lens, Canon EFS 15-85 IS 1:3.5-5.6 USM lens and Canon EF 100mm 1:2.8L USM Macro lens. I also pack a HD and CP filter. When not trekking great distances I also carry a Surui 2205 carbon fibre tripod.

Feedback

When wandering the streets always keep your eye out for interesting faces both young and old and when in doubt as to whether it is worthy of a shot just take it. Some of my favourite portrait shots are ones that I procrastinated over. Unless you are taking candid shots from a distance always ask permission before clicking away.
