On an overcast morning in Grand Coulee, near a desert lake in eastern Washington, I came upon this lichen covered rock among a heap of broken bits. Sheer rock cliffs surrounded me and a layer of fog blanketed the environment. I remember this morning fondly as the coulee came alive with a cacophonous roar of various bird songs. I don't think I ever saw a single bird that morning, but there countless making their presence felt.
