Its remote location, in the northwest corner of Ladakh, 15 kms from the Line of Control (LoC) separating India and Pakistan, has given it a very colorful and dramatic history.
Turtuk is unique in contrast to the rest of Ladakh and indeed India. Residents are fair-skinned and rosy-cheeked, with aquiline features. The village is divided in two by a glacial stream; Turtuk-Youl and Turtuk-Farol, are connected by a wooden footbridge with the 600 families being almost evenly split between the two sides.
The girl whom i met in the Turtuk village was very shy as she don't see too many tourists.
