Rainbow lorrikeet. Breakfast thief!

Behind The Lens

Location

On my weekly check with my old boss to see if he had any 'odd jobs to do', we always sat on the deck for breakfast to plan the day. Having an outside breakfast is an open invite in Australia to be joined by Lorikeets, Magpies and Cockatoos. One such morning it suddenly struck me how different this must be to others who might find it intriguing. So after moving this little fella aside - to pick up my mobile phone, he kindly re-focused on the croissant left on the plate as his easy pickings. The Rainbow Lorikeet is really common all along the east coast of Australia from north Queensland, down and around to South Australia where it lives in rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. While they normally feed on the nectar from flowers like bottlebrush and grevilleas they also feed on berries and fruits. However, as you can see they are cheeky opportunists who share their magnificent plumage while they share breakfast and as you can see, they aren't shy to invite themselves.

Time

Like most birds, Rainbow Lorikeets are up at the crack of dawn and usually retreat to the shade of woodlands during the heat of the day before flocking together at dusk in a noisy gathering before roosting,

Lighting

There was nothing staged or prepared with the lighting, just point and shoot and t\let the subject do the talking! We were sat outside on an open deck with a roof over the area. It was about 8am with the sun heading upwards and over the house after rising to the front of the house. There was a roof above the deck which was opaque corrugated plastic, which did nicely disperse any direct light.

Equipment

Sorry photo nerds...this was just a plain boring Samsung S7 mobile phone. It did tell me the settings were Aperture f/1.7, ISO 40, Shutter 1/1108, with a focal Length of 420/10.

Inspiration

The intriguing cheek of this little fella. Realising how privileged I am to live in this lucky land and how something like this would be to most other people, I had to capture and share.

Editing

Straight out the phone!

In my camera bag

Like most people these days, I have a mobile phone to hand. When I go out - with the intent to take photos, I grab my secondhand Olympus OMD EM5 (no version!) with the standard Oly 12-50mm kit lens

Feedback

Keep your eyes open, phone or camera handy and just savour everything.
