In the early 2000's Cosmo was rescued from a a drug cartel who used him as a kind of "guard dog". After his rescue, he came to the Albuquerque Zoo in 2004 and later died at a young age of 18 in 2015. While alive each day, in the last hour before sunset, he would climb up on his rock throne and roar until sundown. Because Albuquerque sits in a bowl, he could be heard for 6 miles in any direction.
