Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my townhouse when I lived in Cincinnati. Irial, the cat, loved to survey the front hall and kitchen from the stairs. I had recently painted the walls below the chair rail red, and I noticed her green eyes really "popped" off the red.

Time

This was in the evening, so I did use a flash and the hall lights.

Lighting

I bounced the flash off the white ceiling. I tried bouncing it off the wall, but the red overpowered the natural colors.

Equipment

This was taken with my Canon 5D using the Canon 430 flash.

Inspiration

Irial's green eyes and the bright red took my breath away when I saw her lounging on the steps. I had to take the picture and prayed she'd stay put long enough for one good shot.

Editing

This photo was taken in 2006. I'm certain there was post-processing, but it's so long ago, and my process has changed, all I remember is that I was still using Photoshop for all my processing at the time.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 5D (still the original...but it's time to consider an upgrade) with the Canon 24-105 f/4 lens. I carry the Canon 580ex flash, but rarely use it. I also have a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 in the bag.

Feedback

When taking photos of pets, get to know them if their not yours. Building trust with animals is just as important, if not more so, than building trust with a human model.
