Behind The Lens

Location

Both photos in this manipulation were taken at the Thai Temple, Wat Mongkolranaram, in Tampa, Florida. The Buddha was outside, and the silk flowers were inside the temple.

Time

This was my first visit to the Temple's Sunday Market, and my photographer friends and I arrived about 9:30 in the morning because if you arrive after ten o'clock, the pad thai is usually gone. After feasting on a variety of authentic Thai dishes, we wandered around the grounds and into the temple, so by the time I took either photo, it was late morning.

Lighting

The Buddha statue was outside, and the sun was bright that morning, giving the statue a bit more of a golden glow. The flowers were inside, but I didn't use a flash. There was enough natural light coming in the windows, as seen by the highlights in the gold background.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D (1st generation) and a Canon lens, 24-105 1:4. I did not use a tripod or flash.

Inspiration

Outside, the statue is tall and stands at the entrance to the grounds. I wanted to capture his peaceful gaze down on anyone who passed; I shot him from several angles and distances. This shot best captured his regal yet loving gaze. The pink of the silk flowers against the gold caught my eye. The combination of pink and gold isn't seen often, but it's a color pair that pleases my eye, so I was happy to see it inside the Temple. I didn't get the inspiration to combine the photos until I was home and sorting through the ones I'd keep.

Editing

This image is two photos that I layered in Photoshop. I don't recall the specifics, because the image is over ten years old, and I don't use Photoshop anymore. I do recall that I was teaching myself how to use Layers and that I selected Multiply. I probably fine-tuned saturation. As I was playing with the composition, I cropped the Buddha statue at his waist. I experimented with flipping him to see if I preferred him on the left or the right. The flower image is zoomed in to make the flowers larger than life because flowers for Buddha should not be small.

In my camera bag

I primarily use my Canon 5D (still the first generation one!) and the Canon lens 24-105. I do have a Canon 70-200 2.8 lens as well. My flashes are the Canon 430 and 580, but they are under utilized because I enjoy the challenge of working with the light in the scene. I own a Manfrotto tripod, but rarely use it, which is a challenge in low light.

Feedback

I love this image because it truly came from the heart. I am not a highly technical photographer. A scene or object catches my eye, and I shoot it. I haven't used Photoshop in years, but I enjoyed playing with the many ways that images could come together in Layers. Play and have fun with the images and tools you have. That's how I created Flowers for Buddha.
