Published by National Geographic and selected as one of their best photos of 2018. I have mixed emotions about this photograph. A surreal moment. The owner of the house I had been staying in for nearly 3 weeks came back briefly during a lull in the eruption only to see the entire scene erupt once more. He watched as the lava consumed part of his property down below. He decided to sit in a garden chair and watch it in numb resignation. As a full moon began to rise I saw him take out his phone to photograph it. This area was later surrounded by lava and the house was sadly destroyed by a brush fire started by lava overspill from one of the lava rivers that formed behind the house like the one in the scene here.
