Location
This was one of several Angels in the Helsinki Cathedral (Lutheran) While we were there, they did a 16 minute history lecture in English. The building was beautiful, inside & out. There were so many opportunities for photos it was hard to leave.Time
This was about noon, local time. The light was natural with sunlight through the windows.Lighting
Lighting on this shot was natural indirect through clear windows. Some parts of the church had some spectacular sun rays and shadows. But that's another photo.Equipment
The camera was a Canon T3i with a Canon 70-300mm lens. Exposure was 1/50 sec at f/5.6 and iso @ 1600. Tripods are generally not permitted in the churches, so I was shooting at a higher than normal iso and hand held. I did Bracket the exposure, but this was the center of the set.Inspiration
I enjoy taking pictures of the architecture and the art in old churches, especially in Europe. I could have spent most of the day there, but there were several other stops on the agenda. I was looking for places where the natural light seem to be exceptional on the subject.Editing
PP used LightRoom 5. I did crop out a few tourist heads, and balanced the lighting a little. I also increased the saturation to what I remembered from the moment. In my camera bag
On trips where cities and buildings are the subject, I carry a Canon 70D and a T3i. I have a 28-105mm lens on the 70D and a 70-300mm II IS USM on the 3Ti. I also carry a Nifty Fifty and a Tokina 11-16mm. I have a 600 II EX Canon flash with a diffuser and a variety of filters, including ND-var and several star filters. I also have a set of 10x-25 Nikon binocularsFeedback
Take several minutes to sit and take in the scene. You want the memories as well as the photos. Then compose pictures in your mind. Which ones will mean the most. Move around to get the best light and angle. Take several photos ( I usually do at least 10) Move to another position and look at your subject again. Take several more photos, then look for your next target. Make sure that your memories of places you visit are not limited to what you see through the lens. See your picture before you take it. Look at everything before you start to shoot, and don't be afraid to move around. This photo was taken using the back of a pew for stabilization
