Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was actually taken at the Hard Rock Hotel in Adeje, Tenerife. As you can imagine, the hotel was laced in music memorabilia and this shot was the first thing that took my eye on entering.

Time

I took this photo moments after entering the hotel. Whilst the rest of my party waiting in the line to check in I went for a wonder around the lobby with my camera already around my neck. It was just approaching noon.

Lighting

The piano was situated in an ideal position within in the hotel lobby, right in front of a huge glass wall (that led out to the pool area) and fortunately the sunlight was gushing in through the windows creating a really strong contrast between black and white which I feel gives a lovely definition in the instruments shape and form.

Equipment

This image was really simply shot with my Nikon D60 in one of my pre-set monochrome settings. It was a simple case of great subject and ideal lighting.

Inspiration

As a musician myself I am completely infatuated by the form and shape of all musical instruments. Being in the Hard Rock Hotel, I was presented with an abundance of visual curios and pieces of memorabilia which was an absolute delight. The piano was first

Editing

Fortunately no post-processing was needed for this particular shot, but I don't tend to ever do any post-processing when shooting monochrome. I have a handful pre-made setting on my camera depending on the lighting situation.

In my camera bag

When ever I'm out on a shooting expedition I am always equipped with my Nikon D60 and always take a 35mm camera with me. Most recently I have been using my Pacemaker Lomography camera as I really love the light bleeds and atmosphere the camera creates on film.

Feedback

I think my 101 advice would be to always keep your eyes peeled both for subject matter, but also on the natural lighting on environments. Lighting and angles can make such a dramatic difference to your shot so always be mindful of light and what angle best applies with making the most out of what you have in front of you. But most of all just get shooting and enjoy every second of it.
