Behind The Lens

Location

"Ascension was taken where I was living, from the front of my sister's home on the lakefront of Wawa Lake, in the Algoma Region of Northern Ontario. Wawa Lake is the only spring fed lake of volcanic origins in this region and empties into Lake Superior.

Time

Every sunrise over Wawa Lake was "magical", and being an early morning person, I captured many moments, moods and seasons, such as this one. A lone Loon can be seen in the distance and it's call echoed across the water to herald the rising sun.

Lighting

This is all natural light as it was presented. Being a medium artist working in watercolors, acrylics, inks and colored pencil most of my life, I have developed a "eye" for clicking the shutter when I perceive the moment to be extra special.

Equipment

This was taken with my I-phone S6, not my usual Canon SX710HS. It was all I had on me at the moment.

Inspiration

My sister and I had just returned from a road trip to BC and back. It was a momentous and special time both in seeing family, old friends and places we loved, but also a very spiritual time elicited by our stay in traditional ancestral lands of our First Nations heritage. Two months later, my sister passed away suddenly. She had lived here for 20 years, and I had joined her after we were both widowed. This particular sunrise captured all I was feeling at the time.

Editing

Just some very minor tweaking to sharpen the horizon line of the pines.

In my camera bag

Usually when I am out hiking or walking I take my Canon SX710HS, extra batteries, and a small hand-sized tripod j.i.c. Depending upon where I am going and how long I will be out, I have a pack in my vehicle with attire extras in case of weather changes. A knife is ever on my belt.

Feedback

Being in the right place at the right time is of course the best opportunity. However, developing the ability to use your peripheral vision as well as direct observation, has helped me many times to take a great shot of something I may have missed or disregarded as ordinary. In outdoor settings it helps to just find a good place to sit for awhile and be still, quietly observing the changes of light, and any activities around you. Attuning yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually frees you to see the often unseen, to hear the often unheard, and to know the very often unknown. And if you are in that space of being, then you will be amazed at what your camera will capture for you.
