Location
I took this photo at St Ouen on the Channel Islands of Jersey. The silhouette of the tower against the “Golden Hour” sunset was a shot too good to miss.Time
Arguably one of my favourite shots, I took it as the Sun was setting around 8pm. it was the perfect time to achieve the type of shot I was looking for, which was having the tower silhouetted against the golden sunset. Thankfully the beach was quiet and there weren’t many people there enabling me to get a natural shot undisturbed.Lighting
I wanted the image to seem mysterious hence my aim to achieve a silhouette outline of the tower. Due to the sunset it enabled me to focus my camera on the topaz colours making the entire image eye catching.Equipment
This shop was taken on a Canon 750D with a 18 to 55mm lens. I also used a small portable tripod to ensure the image was stable.Inspiration
I’ve always had a close relationship with the ocean and wanted to capture a perfect, yet striking image of St Ouen’s Tower silhouetted against Jersey’s iconic “Golden Hour” sunset. The reflection of the tower on the glasslike sand also enabled me to capture a different element of the landscape, something I had never achieved before.Editing
There was minimal post processing after the photo was taken that I used a preset option on the camera to ensure that the colours stood out and that the silhouette was crisp and clear. I used Adobe Lightroom to make the colours pop and to ensure that the reflection on the sandal also drew the eye.In my camera bag
In my bag I normally carry my camera a Canon 750 D, and extra battery pack, some small weights to be used on a camera stabiliser, a filter carrier and a portable tripod. I also carry a 18mm to 55mm lens.Feedback
Jersey is renowned for its golden hour sunset which takes place between 8 to 9 pm in the summer though 6 to 7 pm in the winter. It’s worth ensuring that you take notice of when the sunset will take place, where you wish to take the picture and ensure you give yourself enough time to set up. Also St Ouen’s beach is completely covered by the sea at high tide, so it’s worth paying attention to tide times.
