Location
This photo is taken on the island of Jersey, just off the coast of the UK. The causeway which connects the Lighthouse to the island is Covered as the tide comes in, so I had to time the shot perfectly.Time
This photo was photographed on a summer’s evening as the sun began to set. It is my favourite time to shoot as the “golden hour” on Jersey is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. The peaceful calmness of the lighthouse’s setting allows you to fully absorb yourself into the photograph session and enjoy capturing this stunning Jersey landmark.Lighting
The main focus was trying to ensure that the reflection of the lighthouse would stand out as clearly as the lighthouse itself. Through the darkening sunset, the colours were crisper and outlines of the house and coastline were much more defined, enabling to capture the shot perfectly.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon EOS 750D with a EF-S 18-55mm lens and tripod. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
Jersey is a place I have visited for years throughout my childhood. The sense of calmness, stillness and serenity of the Island is overwhelming and I hoped to capture that through this image. By shooting in black and white, the warmth and beauty of the lighthouse comes through which is something I hoped to achieve.Editing
Using Adobe Lightroom the processing equipment allowed me to define the lighthouses silhouette and highlight the reflection in the water. It also enabled me to create a darker faded border to focus the eye into the composition. In my camera bag
I’m someone who believes that the less the better! Normally I pack my camera and a small tripod if required. Photography for me is all about capturing the unique and unpredictable nature of landscapes. I try to stay away from the staging or planning my compositions too much and taking minimal equipment allows me action this.Feedback
Patience. Take you time and take lots of shots. Don’t be frightened to press the capture button as often as possible. The more photos the more choice you have to find that one shot which speaks most to you. Also don’t be frightened to experiment. Landscape photography can be just as forward thinking as portrait or expressionist photography. Be loud and unique!
