The image was captured at Falls Creek in August during the FIS ANC Ski Cross (SX) event. It was the first time in many years that an FIS international skiing event had been held there.Time
I'd noted the schedule of events, knew the discipline of SX I wanted to capture and ventured out in the afternoon to shoot the event. This shot was taken mid afternoon in winterLighting
The light was variable during the afternoon due to clouds rolling across the sky and, in this one, it provided a nice filter but leaving some soft shadows from the side.Equipment
I was using a Canon 70-200 f2.8 ISII L attached to a Canon 1Dx Mk2 which is my go to set up for a lot of sports.Inspiration
I always enjoy taking sporting images and when I saw that this event was on I wanted to get some shots. I usually try different vantage points and worked my way down the course until I reached this point where I was able to capture the skiers through a compression into the bend in this image and then onto a jump. At this point of the course they were really pushing hard to get some speed to the finish and I did get lucky with this image with the nice diagonal through the image and the repetition of red, white and blues through it.Editing
This image didn't require much in the way of adjustments - a small crop and some minor exposure adjustments is all that was done to it.In my camera bag
What I take with me varies upon what I'm shooting for the day - it's always something different. If I'm doing sports it will include a second body and 3 or 4 fast lenses to cover the long and short ends whereas for landscape it would be one body, a couple of lenses, tripod and filters.Feedback
I have always enjoyed sports and have watched many, many different ones over the years, so I usually have an idea of the type of image I want to capture. If I'm not that familiar with a specific sport, I'll research the it, including it's rules to get an idea of how and where to take the images I want. Even after researching the sport, I'll get to the specific venue early and get sight lines and shooting positions planned. Preparation is always an advantage.
