Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture next to a marshy pond with lily pads on the east side of the Jardin des plantes (Garden of the Plants) in Paris. The gardens extend east from the Natural History museum towards the River Seine and were planted with medicinal herbs in 1635 by Guy de La Brosse, King Louis XIII’s physician.

Time

I took this picture on November 9th 2007, probably at 2:00 pm.

Lighting

The weather was very fine that day with strong sunlight, all the better.

Equipment

I took this picture with a Nikon 70–300 mm zoom, at 300 mm & ƒ11, on a Nikon F4 and Kodak Portra NC ISO 160 film.

Inspiration

Herons stand dozens of minutes or hours staring at the water surface of a pond, looking for fish or other prey. This bird’s transfixed gaze fascinated me as well.

Editing

Aside my habitual brightening & darkening and raising contrast region by region, I remember taking something out in the upper-left side. The depth of field was very shallow since I'd zoomed in so much, and yet there was something distracting even though it was so out of focus.

In my camera bag

I bought a Nikon D600 at the end of 2013 and ten years later it still works fine though the camera looks very used. I always have a polarizing lens, a Silk Mini Pro III tabletop tripod if I'll be out at night, and another lens or flash, according to my plans.

Feedback

Look around, sideways, left and right, and listen. What could be the most interesting thing to photograph might well not be directly in front of you!
