On a dampish August day, we drove up into the hills off Chena Hot Springs Road near Fairbanks, Alaska, to pick apples in an old orchard. As we left, I was struck by the colors on this large mountain ash just above the apple, plum and cherry trees. While the leaves were mostly green, a few branches were displaying golden leaves of autumn - a preview of the inevitable seasonal changes to come. The hills are covered with a mix of dark green conifers and light green leaves of aspen and birch. Beyond the hills is the blue-green of the Tanana Valley.
