In the second world war, army forts designed by Guy Maunsell were installed at the mouth of the Thames estuary to protect the city of London from enemy aircraft.

During the Sixties, the forts served as home to offshore radio pirate stations Radio Sutch and Radio City. These days they are rust-encrusted and eerie structures, and virtually inaccessible, but are sometimes used for location work by bands to shoot music video promotions.
