During the Chacabuco expedition I saw my fellow struggling with the weight on his back. It was very much like the weight I was carrying, plus camera and tripod -all the time!-. He was crossing through glaciers and I was behind, I couldn't stop myself from taking this shot. off-season is awesome, it gives you the time to connect with nature and to feel it in it's wholeness.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken close to the Torres del Paine National Park, in Southern Chilean Patagonia.

Time

This was a route that some people interested on it's touristic development where trying to search and set the path. It was supposed to be a three-day trek route. We where walking through the valley up and down, walking over glaciers, through the Anden forest and the tundra. A lot of landscape changes. This photo was taken during the last day of the trekking. I usually like to visit places like these during winter time. This was shot on July just in the middle of winter here in Patagonia, around 2:00 pm.

Lighting

If you notice, this photo was taken about 2 pm, but as it's winter and it was snowing you can't clearly tell just by looking at the picture. I was mesmerized about the bubbles frozen in the pond and the ice, then I looked up and saw one of my companions walking just a few meters from where I was, so I just took the picture.

Equipment

For this expedition I was taking pictures with the Canon 5D Mk II, a 16-35 2.8 Canon lens, and a Manfrotto tripod. No flashes, and the least equipment as possible, as I had to carry all during the whole trekking.

Inspiration

Actually, I had really bad weather for taking landscape pictures. A lot of snow, rain and clouds. I saw the opportunity to take something different, not as my traditional landscape photos with perfect sunrises or sunsets.

Editing

I always process a single image, this is something that I really like about photography. Just basic corrections on Camera Raw, and some detail extraction and color in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

As I do a lot of trekking photography, usually I bring 2 lenses, my wide angle (the 16-35mm), and also a 50 mm if I need to some close ups. Although nobody brings a 50 mm for landscape photo, I really like to work with this lens also. It makes me walk closer to what I need to capture and also it's very bright for night photography.

Feedback

Well, the advice would be to try something different and when weather conditions are not good to take photos, see more closely, capture details and have fun!
