While exploring around Lake Ponchartrain, we happened upon this area with piles of rubble, the remains of a very ornate wall and what appeared to have been a pretty substantial pier of the past. It is now very overgrown, with trash peppering the entire area....as well as a very suspicious, putrid odor.
Evidently, for almost 175 years, this area was an entertainment row, complete with hotels, restaurants, clubs and an amusement park overlooking the lake and known as West End Park. The oldest establishment in this district was a restaurant called Bruning's that opened in the 1840s and moved to West End Park in 1859. This landmark restaurant was destroyed by Hurricane Georges in 1998 and moved to another location, only to be washed away by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
