Behind The Lens

Location

I visited Auckland, NZ, on a stopover on my way to South America for my 'once-in-a-lifetime' trip to Antarctica (which, incidentally, I ended up doing twice).

Time

I had been walking around Auckland with my camera for some hours and seen some of these light posts earlier in the day. In the late afternoon, I saw this parade of them leading to the clock tower.

Lighting

The late afternoon lighting was soft and the street lights had started to come on (although you can some have not been lit). There are still some shadows visible (the people in the background).

Equipment

Canon 200D, 55-200 mm lens set at 44 mm, f22, 1/30, ISO 1600, handheld

Inspiration

I loved the way the red lamp posts were so bright against the fairly grey, overcast day, and they seemed to march towards the clocktower in the distance. It seemed an ideal viewpoint to use line to lead the viewers eye to the clock tower. In a sense I'm not sure what I see as the main subject - is it the line of red lamp posts, or is it the clock tower?

Editing

I added a little clarity and contrast in LR and cropped the shot to remove an ugly pavement at the bottom of the picture.

In my camera bag

On this trip I had two cameras - the 200D and a 6D, the 50-250 lens (for the 200D) and a 24 -105mm lens for the 6D. Since then I've stopped using the 200D much, and carry a 5D Mk4 as my primary camera with the 6D as a 2nd. I usually carry a 100-400 mm (tamron) lens, the 24-105, and a 16-35. I also shoot often with a 50mm prime, and occasionally (when I am feeling brave) with a 14mm prime. I photograph wildlife and landscapes predominantly, which is why I carry both wide and long lenses.

Feedback

Look for the patterns and colour contrasts, and move about until you get a good angle. Think about what is around the edges of your shots ( I would have loved to have been able to do less cropping on this shot!)
