This shot was taken in my backyard for an assignment given to me by my digital composition professor in college. It is unusual for my husky mix rescue to be so still and calm, so I was very excited when something caught his attention and kept his interest piqued while I took a couple of photos.Time
It was just before sunset and close to the golden hour. I was trying to get some shots in before it was too dark after coming home from work earlier in the day. The temperature was nice out and the sunset was gorgeous.Lighting
I really wanted to capture my dog in a shot that really spoke to who he is and I was actually a little nervous with the lightening at first, due to the daylight running out on me. But, with his attention focused on something in the distance, I have no idea as to what, I was thankful to be able to change positions and angles til one with the right amount of light to highlight his features was discovered.Equipment
My camera was a Nikon D3400 and the settings were as follows; an aperture of f/4.8 with it set at an ISO of 200 and the shutter speed at 10/500. Focal Length was 380/10 and no other equipment was utilized. I also shoot in the RAW format, something I have gotten used to since college.Inspiration
The assignment was for colored photographs to be converted into black and white digitally. My goal was to use both architectural and organic subjects to hand in as my final works to be graded. My dog, Shamrock, was one of the organic subjects and was one out of the six or seven finalized photographs I had handed in to my professor. But the original inspiration was the determination to capture an awesome photograph of him without movement at the last minute or being constantly restless. He is a very challenging subject to focus on since he is full of boundless energy.Editing
I converted the original shot into a greyscale black and white through the process of a layer in the Photoshop program. Other than that, perhaps a little cropping but no major cosmetic work needed to be done.In my camera bag
I carry my Nikon D3400 in either my smaller protector that hangs on the hip or my larger Nikon bag that carries extra SD cards, my back up Lithium Ion battery, my extended lens, and my camera Bluetooth remote. Periodically I will carry my tripod with me in its own case for low light situations and group shots.Feedback
Dogs have a temperament as unique as each snowflake that falls from the sky. Each owner knows their dog’s behavior and habits. Using this knowledge would help them photograph their dog by using what different devices and distractions that causes them to remain focused and at ease for the shot. Some dogs are not as energetic and would not create such an obstacle to photograph. Understanding how your individual subject works would be key in this type of set up - and some patience sprinkled with determination would not hurt either.
