Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken in Domino Park, Brooklyn. A newly opened park at the time. The park is on the river and looks directly over at Manhattan.Time
As you can probably already tell from the shot and the title, this was taken at sunset. The beautiful thing about Domino Park is that it is directly East of Manhattan so is one of my favourite spots to catch the sunset in New York as you are looking back west as the sun setting behind Manhattan.Lighting
The spot in the park where I took this is my favourite hit of the park. There is a water feature directly in front of a pyramid of seating steps. It’s almost like sitting in a tiered bleacher for an outdoor play. The star of the show being the sunset.Equipment
Shot with a Sony A7 III full framed mirrorless camera and a Lensball. No tripod.Inspiration
The moment. I don’t like set up shots. I just shoot what I feel and see. The sky had these amazing textured clouds. I thought the use of the Lensball would add a new depth to the shot. My granny used to have a collection of marbles. These kind of shots remind me those marbles and her.Editing
For most photography I shoot RAW so the shot has to be processed. I don’t like to do too much editing of a shot, unless it is an obvious experimental shot. I like to take a “warts and all” approach to photography. I want to capture the moment as it was. Not alter it. This shot I just processed the file with minor adjustments to the contrast etc.In my camera bag
Always have my Sony A7 III. Usually I have my 90mm macro lens, 50mm prime lens. I always have a small pocket camera too for times I can’t use my main set up. I have been using a Canon Powershot SX740 HS. I usually have my Lensball too.Feedback
A Lensball is a fantastic tool for capturing shots. I find you get the best shots with a macro lens and a shallow depth of field. Careful while using in direct sunlight as the ball really concentrates the light and can burn you or start a fire. On a different occasion, my friend was holding the Lensball out in the sun and it burned a hole in her shirt (and through to her bra even). So be careful. Don’t look at the sun directly though it and keep it tucked away out of direct sunlight when not using it. Otherwise have fun and see what you can capture in your “marble”
